Why I Don’t Handle or Use Unfamiliar Herbs

I have learned to respect the powers of the plant family. There are several potential dangers associated with handling or using unfamiliar herbs. These include:

1. Allergic reactions: Some people may have allergies to certain herbs, and if they come into contact with them, they may experience allergic reactions such as skin rashes, itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing. I used 100% white thyme to anoint my forehead without knowing its properties. It left my head red, burning, and in pain until I washed it off throughly.

2. Toxicity: Certain herbs can be toxic or poisonous if used in large quantities or in the wrong way. This is especially true for herbs that are not commonly used in cooking or traditional medicine. Without proper knowledge and guidance, it can be easy to accidentally ingest a toxic herb.

3. Interactions with medications: Some herbs may interact with certain medications, either by decreasing their effectiveness or causing adverse reactions. This is particularly important for people who are taking prescription medications for chronic conditions.

4. Lack of regulation: Unlike prescription medications, herbs are not regulated by the government for safety and effectiveness. This means that there is no guarantee of the quality or purity of the herb, and it may contain harmful substances or contaminants.

5. Misidentification: If you are gathering herbs from the wild, there is a risk of misidentifying them. This can lead to accidentally using a toxic plant instead of the intended herb.

6. Lack of knowledge: Using unfamiliar herbs without proper knowledge and understanding of their properties and potential side effects can be dangerous. Without knowing the correct dosage, preparation method, or contraindications, you may unknowingly put yourself at risk.

Overall, handling or using unfamiliar herbs can be dangerous because of the potential for allergic reactions, toxicity, interactions with medications, lack of regulation, misidentification, and lack of knowledge. It is important to always do thorough research and consult with a healthcare professional before using any unfamiliar herbs.
