The Basics of Your Birth Chart

Birth charts are one of my favorite components of Astrology.  A birth chart is simply a picture of the sky at the second your were born on paper.  It’s a pie chart of the celestial bodies and their exact positions in the sky.  Instead of everything revolving around the Sun, a birth chart depicts the Sun and the other planets revolving around you (on earth), at your exact time of birth.  The positions of the celestial bodies and their relation to each other reveal accurate aspects of your entire life.  Together we will learn to analyze and interpret the information to gain insight into our past, present, and future.

The information in your chart represents different aspects of your personality, strengths, challenges, and overall life path.  In this post we break it down to simple forms so we will eventually be able to read and interpret birth charts for ourselves.  Birth charts can also be used to help guide you through life’s ups and downs as well as assist you in maing predictions about your future.

The Big 3

Sun

Moon

Ascendant

The Big 3 are the main aspects of your birth chart that will tell the main story of you and your life path. Your Sun, Moon, and Ascendant sign are how you show up in the world, your inner most thought processes, and what you want people to see about you. The first 3 celestial points and their placements tell a story about your identity, first impressions, and your introduction to the world or a room.

1. The Sun Sign

Also called zodiac sign, the Sun sign is determined by the position of the Sun at the time of your birth and influences your overall personality traits.  This is probably the most well-known aspect of astrology, representing your core identity, ego, and life purpose.  This is how the world sees you, how you shine, and what activities energize you.  The Sun sign is your response when asked “What’s your zodiac sign?”

The energy the Sun brings

Element – Fire

Zodiac – Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

Ruler – Leo

Duality – Masculine

Energy – Outward

In your chart the Sun sign is the equivalent to your zodiac sign.

2. The Moon Sign

The Moon sign in your chart represents the position of the Moon at your time of birth.  It is just as important as your Sun sign, your Moon sign reflects your emotions, instincts, and innermost desires.  It reveals how you process your feelings and navigate your inner world.  The Sun sign reveals the side of you the world sees, the Moon sign reveals side of you your close friends and family member get to see.  I like the explanation that says; the Sun is the front yard and front door of your house (what your neighbors see from the outside) and the Moon is your bedroom (the most intimate, private area of your home). Typically, the Moon sign is not as obvious as the Sun Sign.

The energy the Moon brings

Element – Water

Zodiac – Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio

Ruler – Cancer

Duality – Feminine

Energy – Inward

3. The Rising Sign

Also known as the Ascendant, your Rising sign governs how you present yourself to the world and how others perceive you. It’s like your astrological mask that you wear in social situations.  The ascendant is the helm or the place from which your life is steered from, the initiatory energy.  This aspect is about what incites and motivates you.  The ruler of this sign’s energy will be a significant or reoccurring theme in your life.

The energy the Ascendant brings

Element – Earth then Fire

Zodiac – Always occupies the 1st house in the birth chart

Ruler – The ruler of this sign(your Ascendant) is the Ruler of your entire chart

Energy – Cardinal, Iniatatory

4. The Planets

Mercury

Venus

Mars

Jupiter

Saturn

Uranus

Neptune

Pluto

In your chart these 8 planets will be placed throughout.  The house and the zodiac sign will make the differnce in how the story of that energy plays out.  The closer and faster moving planets are Mercury, Venus, and Mars; the inners.  The remaining planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are further away and move around us at slower rates, the outers.  Each planet in your birth chart represents different aspects of your personality and life experiences.  For example, Venus rules desires and relationships, while Mars governs passions and drive. Jupiter’s energy is luck, opportunities, and expansion.

The inner planets are the personal aspects of your life.

Jupiter and Saturn are social planets.

The most distant planets are generational planets.

The Inner Planets

The next three planets are know as personal planets. They are the closest planets to the Sun and travel around the ecliptic at a faster rate than the other planets. Each of the three play a significant role in your personality. The fast rate of movement of these three planets effect your life day to day.

These three planets also give insight to how you interact with the world around you. Your relationships, how you process and express emotions, pleasures and desires, and the qualities that shape who you are can be revealed in these three inner planets. In your birth chart, each planet occupies a house and sign. Some planets will overlap in houses or signs. Each planet in a house or sign will tell a story.

The Social Planets

These two planets are not as close to the Sun as the inner planets but not as far as the outer planets. They are Jupiter and Saturn. Like the logistics of the planets, the inners are concerned with self, outers with generational issues, the social planets are all about public standing (to describe the energy in basic terms). Jupiter and Saturn effect larger groups of people at a time (opposed to the Moon causing rapid emotional changes) for a longer period of time, all at one time. When the social planets come in contact with our inner planets they effect the quaility of personality in social settings.

The two social planets give insight to the areas in your life where you will be prone to have it easy or have a hard time, and what will be your legacy in society. You can use the information in these placements to know what to expect in society. Where will you have luck when it comes to the public, all are found in your Jupiter placement.

The Outer Planets

The outer planets, also known as the generational planets, are the three planets furthest from the Sun. This means they also take the longest time to go around the Sun. In line with their far placements in the solar system, energy of the outer planets dominate and transform generations of people at the same time. These planets energies are felt by groups as opposed to a personal level. Groups of people go through life changing era’s and will learn long-term life lessons. The experiences will be simliar for groups of people born in the same couple of years and can last more than two years, hence the term generational planets.

The Other Important Celestial Bodies

There are a few other basic celestial points, bodies, and astroids found in your birth chart. We will only cover three points the MC (Medium Coeli), nodes, and Lilith. MC, the north and south nodes, and the Lilith point. These three points play a big role in your daily life and personility. The MC point or Midhaven (and its opposite IC (Imum Coeli) express your professional path and psychological(home) life.

Medium Coeli

The MC in your chart will express the work you do in your life that will be the most meaningful to you or the careers/profession you will build your public notarity (big or small) and public legacy. MC is concerned with your professional life and social status.

The North and South Nodes

The nodes are twins as well. The north and a south node points give the indication of the positive qualities you should work to enhance and the negative qualities you should let go to move toward your purpose in life. For better understanding, imagine this hypothetical scenario. You have a choice between marrying a person who is your exact opposite or a person who is exactly like you. The relationship with the different person (opposite, challenge, qualities that promote growth) will allow you to experiences that can allow you to grow. The “twin” (predictable, easy, comfortable, qualities you need to drop) can end up being a repeating cycle that leads to destruction.

The North and South Nodes reveal the rode to expansion, purpose, and what needs to be shed to get there. The North Node speaks of the motivation and the placements will tell you the qualities of these motivations. The South Nodes speaks of patterns and behaviors that are detrimental to your life purpose. Astrologers say the nodes tell you where you are going and where came from.

Lilith

Beyond the conventional planets, Lilith shines a light on the shadow self, the untamed and rebellious energy we have. Lilith is not a physical celestial body but a point in space that represents our primal instincts and deepest desires. The parts of ourselves we try to ignore and suppress is revealed in Lilith. This point on your birth chart is associated with taboo subjects and raw emotions. The planet, house, and zodiac sign where Lilith sits in your chart insights into our fears and subconscious motivations. Qualities in us that are not easily seen. In astrology, Lilith symbolizes our unapologetic authenticity and the areas in our lives where we may feel marginalized or misunderstood.

The house each planet is in tells a story.

5. The Houses

The houses in your birth chart represent different areas of your life, such as career, relationships, and health. The planets in each house can give you insights into how these areas will play out in your life.  Each of the 12 houses coorespond with a different aspect of life.  For example, 4th House is the house of family, home, and lineage; 9th House is the house of travel, learning, and teaching; or the 10th House is the House of Public Life and career.  You can look within a house to analyze specific information about a person.  Even houses in your chart that are empty give information about you.

Let’s take a simple look at the chart above.

The chart has 3 rows of circles. Starting from the perimeter and moving toward the center of the pie chart. The 1st circle has the 12 zodiac signs. They are always in sequential order. The 2nd (or middle) row has the placements of the planets with their various degrees. The 3rd and final row of placements and these sequential numbers are the called houses. Inside the circle, the red and blue lines are called aspects.

Aspects represent connections between planets and points in the chart, indicating the energetic relationships between them based on their angular distances apart; these lines signify aspects like trine, conjunction, opposition, square, and sextile.
